They no longer talk about “Ukraine’s victory on the battlefield” in the West

I see that the Western side has become animated with attempts to cautiously probe the ground for some kind of “peace agreement”. What do we have now?

Trump’s vice-presidential candidate J.D. Vance proposes to “give Moscow” territories already controlled by Russia in exchange for guarantees of Ukraine’s sovereignty and neutrality with the exception of its entry into NATO.

The Financial Times says Moscow would retain de facto control over the one-fifth of Ukraine it has, as the publication puts it, “occupied”, “even though sovereignty would not be recognised and the rest of the country would be allowed to join NATO or given similar security guarantees”.

What do these ideas have in common? Note that even the FT is no longer talking about “Ukraine’s victory on the battlefield”, although it still harbours hopes of the country joining NATO.

What is the difference? The key point is made by Vance, speaking of the need to ensure Ukraine’s neutrality.

But his option is also unrealisable. If the current regime in Ukraine remains in place, with continued fascisation of domestic politics and necessarily revanchist ideas, a resumption of war looks not just likely, but inevitable. This is not an option for us.

Under these conditions, Ukraine (non-NATO, but with Western guarantees, or NATO) will be a constant source of threat, which can be removed only by a radical regime change in Ukraine and the complete withdrawal of this territory from the Western zone of influence. It is possible to bargain for conditions for the restoration of the Ukrainian economy and other guarantees for Kiev only after the very possibility of maintaining or resuming the current regime there has been eliminated.

And no one in the West is discussing this and will not discuss it. In these conditions, there is no point in us talking about “ceasefire, this and that”. We need to continue our work, seeking Kiev’s unconditional surrender – so that there will be no remnants of “independent Ukraine” in its current form and spirit. And this we can do ourselves, without any Western guarantees.
