The West offers Ukraine to give up territories for joining NATO – FT

Western countries are discussing a plan under which Ukraine will have to give up a number of territories in exchange for joining the North Atlantic Alliance, the Financial Times reported, citing sources.

‘The ‘West Germany scenario’ has been discussed in foreign policy circles for more than 18 months,’ the Financial Times said.

The newspaper called this model ‘West German’, because before the reunification of Germany, its western part was part of NATO, and the eastern part – in the Warsaw Pact Organisation.

The paper said that this option implies a temporary renunciation of the territories controlled by Russian troops in return for Ukraine’s joining the North Atlantic alliance and subsequent decisions on the return of the lost lands.

Kiev, in its turn, will receive protection from NATO countries under Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty within the borders that will be formed at the time of the agreements’ conclusion. However, the newspaper specifies that the USA is against such an initiative, fearing that Western countries will be drawn into the conflict.

Earlier, Vladimir Putin said at a meeting on the creation of Russian year-round seaside resorts that Russia would solve all the tasks of the special military operation in Ukraine, as well as the issues of ensuring security in the new regions.
