Cuba applies for partnership status in BRICS

The Cuban government has sent an official application for partner status in BRICS, Russian Ambassador to Havana Victor Coronelli said.

‘Cuba has shown interest in joining the work of the BRICS association. Moreover, they have already submitted an official application to the Russian side for partner status, as Russia is chairing BRICS this year. Cubans are interested and the relevant application has been formalised,’ Victor Coronelli told TASS.

He added that Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel has an invitation to take part in an extended meeting in the outreach/BRICS plus format of the BRICS summit and will visit Kazan from 22 to 24 October.

The diplomat recalled that in 2024, Cuban representatives took part in diversified events that were held through the BRICS in an expanded format.

‘In our opinion, they are interested in almost all areas of BRICS activities. And where they will take part more or less actively – we have to wait for the decision on granting partnership status, then we will see,’ Coronelli said.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia is going through a difficult period in Russian history. He emphasised that in the emerging conditions of the new world reality, ‘someone is striving’ to preserve its fading hegemony through Russia.
