Antonov has warned the US of the risk of nuclear war – Ritter

Former Russian ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov has warned the US leadership about the risk of nuclear war if the conflict in Ukraine further escalates, former US military intelligence officer Scott Ritter said on the social network X.

Anatoly Antonov was appointed Russian ambassador to the United States in 2017. He served as deputy defence minister from 2011 to 2016 and as deputy foreign minister from 2016 to 2017.

On Saturday, 5 October, the Russian diplomatic mission in Washington confirmed that Antonov’s tour of duty as ambassador had ended.

“When we last met <…> he had just recently issued a warning to the US government that an escalation of the situation in Ukraine could lead to nuclear war,” Scott Ritter wrote.

He pointed out that as a result, Washington ignored the “outstretched hand of friendship” of the Russian diplomat. This situation Ritter called “the greatest tragedy of our time”.

Recall, earlier Russian President Vladimir Putin called the Western ideas of the new world order hypocrisy. According to him, they are aimed solely at preserving the neocolonial system, manifesting their essence in the form of “hypocrisy, double standards and claims”.
