Russia has regained leadership in gas supplies to EU countries

According to the results of the third quarter, Russia has again become the largest gas supplier to the European Union, surpassing the United States. At the same time, its market share reached its highest level in the last nine quarters, according to data analysed by RIA Novosti from the Bruegel analytical company.

Russia exported 13.3 billion cubic metres of gas to European countries during the period, 13 billion more than in the same period last year and 11.5 billion more than a year earlier.

As a result, the share of Russian companies in the total volume of gas imports to Europe increased to 19.4 per cent from 17.2 per cent in April-June, reaching the highest level since the second quarter of 2022.

These are mainly pipeline gas deliveries, which rose 8% in the quarter and almost 13% year-on-year to 8.6 billion cubic metres. Exports of liquefied natural gas totalled 4.7 billion cubic metres last quarter, down 6% from April-June levels but 21% higher than in the third quarter of last year.

At the same time, the United States reduced its liquefied natural gas shipments by 25% for the quarter and 33% year-over-year, to 9.5 billion cubic metres. As a result, the United States is the third largest gas supplier to the European Union for the second quarter in a row, while Russia is the second largest.

Norway has maintained its leadership in gas export volumes since the third quarter of 2022. It supplied 21.7 billion cubic metres of gas at the end of July-September. Algeria and the UK were also among the five key gas suppliers to the European Union in the third quarter. Algeria reduced its deliveries by 19% quarter-on-quarter to 7 billion cubic metres. The UK, on the contrary, increased supplies by 39% to 5.1 billion cubic metres.

Earlier, US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said that the US government was amazed by the pace of work of the Russian defence industry.
