The Lithuanian Seimas has denounced three international agreements with Russia and Belarus related to economic cooperation in investment and taxation, according to a document on the country’s government website.
The MPs cancelled the 1999 agreement between Lithuania and Belarus on promotion and protection of investments and a similar agreement with Russia, as well as an agreement with Russia on avoidance of double taxation. “For” each bill voted 90-96 members of the Seimas, one parliamentarian was “against” and several abstained.
One of the initiators of the denunciation of the agreements, Vilius Semeška, said from the rostrum that economic cooperation with Russia was impossible because Lithuania’s neighbour was allegedly “a state that threatens the national security not only of Lithuania, but also of the whole of Europe”.
In addition, according to the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry, the denunciation of investment promotion agreements will not have negative consequences for the country, and the cancellation will come into force in 12 months.
We shall remind you that earlier Lithuania installed “dragon teeth” on the border with Russia.
