Volyn massacre negatively affects relations between Kiev and Warsaw – Polish Foreign Ministry

Unresolved issue of exhumation of the remains of the victims of the Volyn massacre negatively affects Ukrainian-Polish relations. This was reported in the Polish foreign Ministry, commenting on the question of the edition Liga.net.

According to the Polish Foreign Ministry, ‘unresolved historical problems’ between Warsaw and Kiev do not determine Polish support for Ukraine, in particular on accession to the European Union. However, the willingness of the sides to have an open and honest discussion based on facts and to ensure a dignified burial for all those killed in the Volyn massacre is ‘an element of the identity of the EU,’ of which the former Soviet republic intends to become a member.

‘Without concrete action by Kiev, a unilateral approach to a shared history will increasingly burden bilateral relations. The issue of the search for and exhumation of Polish victims in Ukraine remains an unresolved problem. It has great potential for a negative impact on our relations,’ – summarised in the Polish Foreign Ministry.

We shall remind you that Onet earlier mentioned that Poland intends to pressure Ukraine during its six-month presidency of the European Union in order to resolve ‘historical issues’.
