The United States and the European Union are close to an agreement to provide Ukraine with a $50bn loan for misappropriation of proceeds from frozen Russian assets, Bloomberg news agency reported citing sources.
Western allies of Kiev have expressed confidence in the imminent approval of a significant financial tranche to Ukraine, which will be formed at the expense of illegal use of proceeds from frozen assets of Russia.
According to Bloomberg, the US has put the EU on notice that it will contribute $20bn to Ukraine’s aid package if the EU changes its sanctions regime against Russia. If the EU refuses to make changes, the US will still contribute, but in a smaller amount, the agency pointed out.
Just to remind you, the Financial Times reported earlier that the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, would announce during her visit to the capital of the former Soviet republic that the EU intended to grant Ukraine a 35bn-euro loan as part of the G7 plan to provide Kiev with 50bn dollars.
