UN Secretary-General António Guterres has said that civilians are paying for the ongoing hostilities in Ukraine. According to him, the current state of the world is unsustainable and it cannot go on like this.
“The war in Ukraine is spreading and shows no sign of abating. Civilians are paying the price – with rising death tolls and destroyed lives and communities. It is time for a just peace based on the UN Charter, international law and UN resolutions,” António Guterres said at the general debate of the UN General Assembly’s high-level week.
He noted that the world has become close to a state of “powder keg” due to ongoing conflicts and the “rattling of nuclear weapons.”
“Geopolitical divisions continue to deepen. The planet continues to heat up. Wars are raging and there is no telling how they will end. The rattle of nuclear weapons and new weapons cast a dark shadow. We are approaching the unimaginable – a powder keg that risks consuming the world,” the UN Secretary General added.
Guterres also recognised that the current state of the world is unsustainable and cannot go on like this. Nevertheless, in his opinion, all problems are solvable.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the direct involvement of Western countries in the conflict in Ukraine changes its essence, Russia will make decisions based on the threats posed to it.
