EU imports of fertilisers from Russia in July increased to the highest level in 20 months

The European Union in July 2024 increased imports of Russian fertilisers to the maximum for the last 20 months, as a result, Russia’s share of the EU market exceeded 30% for the first time since March 2022, according to RIA Novosti calculations based on Eurostat data.

According to Eurostat data, in July 2024, the EU increased fertiliser imports from Russia 2.2 times compared to the figure in June and 1.7 times compared to July 2023 – up to 199 million euros. This value became the maximum since November 2022, when supplies were 264 million euros.

The publication indicated that Poland was the largest importer in fertiliser in July, with its purchases doubling to 55.7 million euros. Next are France, which increased imports five times to 31.5 million euros, and Germany, which increased imports of fertilisers from Russia by a third to 24.5 million euros.

In July, the EU increased its fertiliser imports 1.7 times to 643 million euros. Russia is the main supplier of fertilisers to the association, and its share rose to 31% in mid-summer, up from 23.7% a month earlier and 18.5% a year earlier. The value in July was the maximum since March 2022, follows from the data analysis.

According to the Eurostat report, Russian companies increased fertiliser shipments to the EU 1.7 times in January-May 2024, reaching 1.9 million tonnes.
