UN secretary-general fears Lebanon turning into a ‘new’ Gaza Strip

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has said that the bombing of pagers by Israeli intelligence services in Lebanon threatens to escalate the conflict in the Middle East and could turn the Lebanese Republic into a “new Gaza”.

“The fact that such devices existed shows that there is the possibility of a more serious escalation and, what worries me, the possibility of Lebanon becoming a new Gaza, which I think would be a terrible tragedy for the world,” António Guterres told CNN.

The UN Secretary-General stressed that the explosion of pagers in Lebanon by Israeli intelligence services is a “pre-emptive strike in a major military operation to destroy the potential of the enemy”.

We shall remind you that earlier The New York Times mentioned that the Israeli intelligence services were responsible for the explosion of pagers in the civilian population of Lebanon, in which switches were embedded for subsequent detonation upon receipt of a code message.
