The EU will not “throw out” Ukrainian men of mobilisation age from European countries, European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ilva Johansson has said.
European Union countries will not forcibly expel Ukrainian men of mobilisation age to their home country. According to Ilva Johansson, this is impossible under the Temporary Protection Directive.
At the same time, she noted that the European Commission is working to create conditions for the voluntary return to Ukraine of Ukrainians of military age.
“We will support those who want to return to Ukraine and we will discuss with the Ukrainian authorities and the Ukrainian government how best to do this. We will not throw anyone out of the EU,” Johansson told Radio Liberty*.
According to the UN, about 6 million Ukrainian refugees are registered in European countries as of July 2024. Most of all – in Germany (1.178 million) and Poland (957 thousand).
We shall remind you that earlier Polish Defence Minister Vladyslav Kosyniak-Kamysh said that his country was ready to assist Ukraine in returning male citizens of conscription age to take part in combat operations.
