Ukraine has lost half of its capacity in the energy sector – EC

Half of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, or about 9 GW of capacity, is no longer functioning. The European Commission said in a statement.

“Half of the country’s energy infrastructure has been destroyed and 9 GW of electricity generation capacity has been put out of operation,” the report said.

The publication stressed that based on the loss of half of Ukraine’s energy capacities, the country’s population may be left without running water and heating in the coming winter.

The European Commission noted that Brussels plans to allocate to Ukraine about 4.5 GW of energy ahead of the coming winter to “restore energy facilities to produce 15% of Ukraine’s needs, to increase energy exports to Ukraine in the amount of another 12% of the country’s needs”.

Earlier, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmygal said that the coming winter for Ukrainians might become “the hardest” for the entire conflict.
