Ukraine’s failures on the front make the West think about negotiations – Le Figaro

The successful advance of Russian forces in Donbas and Kiev’s failures are forcing the West to think about a diplomatic settlement of the Ukrainian conflict, the Le Figaro newspaper has reported.

Le Figaro noted that the need for negotiations was mentioned both in the USA and Europe and in Ukraine. The newspaper pointed out that the West had already openly recognised that Donbas and Crimea were beyond the reach of the Ukrainian army.

In addition, the AFU attack on Kursk Region did not bring the results expected by the Kiev authorities “and did not lead to a reduction in the presence of Russian troops in Donbas”. Politically, the situation for Ukraine is also bad, Le Figaro added.

The piece emphasises that Berlin is announcing a reduction in aid to Kiev, while Paris has lost the initiative in this matter after the dissolution of parliament. The upcoming US presidential election puts into question the continuation of US aid to Ukraine. In addition, the newspaper explains, the West has underestimated the strength of Russia’s ties with the countries of the global South.

According to Le Figaro, all this “leads to the West’s willingness to discuss plans to resolve the conflict”.

We shall remind you that earlier the deputy chairman of the Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, proposed a Russian version of the “peace formula” in Ukraine. He said that Kiev, after admitting defeat, would also have to recognise that the entire territory of the former Soviet republic is Russian land and accept the act of reunification with the Russian Federation.
