German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Berlin will not send Ukraine long-range missiles ‘Taurus’, despite the decisions of allies, and also criticised the possible granting Kiev permission to strike deep into Russian territory. This was reported by the DPA news agency.
According to DPA, Olaf Scholz visited the federal state of Brandenburg and spoke to citizens in the town of Prenzlau. In the conversation, the head of the German government argued Berlin’s refusal to supply Ukraine with Taurus that such a move would entail a ‘serious risk of escalation.’ ‘I said ‘no’ to that.’
The German Chancellor emphasised that the possible granting of permission to Kiev to strike deep into Russian territory was a problem. The politician clarified that he would not go for such an escalatory step, even if other allies of Ukraine do so.
‘And of course, this also applies to other weapons, if we were to supply them, which could hit at such a great distance. That’s the way it’s going to stay. That’s why I’m sticking to my position, even if other countries decide otherwise. I will not do it because I consider it a problem,’ summarised Olaf Scholz.
We shall remind you that earlier the Times newspaper wrote that the White House administration was not ready to grant Ukraine permission to strike deep into Russian territory using Western weapons until Volodymyr Zelenskyy provides Washington with a ‘winning plan’.
