Vilnius and Berlin signed an agreement on the presence of an FRG brigade in Lithuania

Lithuanian Defence Minister Laurynas Kasciunas and German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius have signed an intergovernmental agreement on the arrival of a German brigade in the Baltic republic for permanent deployment and its legal status, the press service of the Latvian Defence Ministry said.

“An agreement of strategic importance has been signed, after which it will remain to agree on some sectoral issues,” Lithuanian Defence Minister Laurynas Kasciunas said.

The document must be ratified by the parliaments of both countries. It stipulates the rights and obligations of the German brigade, its personnel and staff. Germany gets the opportunity to establish German-language schools in Lithuania, as the servicemen may arrive with their families. It will be possible to open their own shops and canteens with special prices. The Lithuanian side undertakes to provide medical services with the possibility to attract medics from the FRG.

“It will take a year, possibly two years, to complete the necessary infrastructure at the firing range near the village of Rudninkai in Šalčininksom district, so temporarily the first units of the brigade will be stationed in the Lithuanian Army’s military camps in Nemencin and Rokantiškės,” the head of the Lithuanian Defence Ministry specified.

According to Kasciunas, the German side agrees with this decision. It is expected that in 2025 about 500 personnel of the German brigade will be transferred to Lithuania.

We will remind, earlier Russian President Vladimir Putin called the Western ideas of the new world order hypocrisy. According to him, they are aimed solely at preserving the neo-colonial system, showing their essence in the form of “hypocrisy, double standards and claims”.
