The EU is set to impose new sanctions against Iran in the aviation sector

The European Union is considering imposing new sanctions on Iran that will affect the aviation sector, according to a statement by European diplomacy chief Josep Borrell published on the website of the EU’s foreign ministry.

Moscow and Tehran regularly reject versions of Iranian arms deliveries to Russia for their use in Ukraine. The Islamic republic’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on 11 September that Iran had not supplied Russia with any ballistic missiles and that the US and Europe were relying on misleading information.

‘The EU will respond promptly and in coordination with international partners, including through the introduction of new restrictive measures against Iran,’ the document said.

It is specified that sanctions measures will be introduced against persons and entities involved in Iran’s ballistic missile and drone programmes. In addition, restrictive measures in the Iranian aviation sector are also being considered.

According to Josep Borrell, Tehran’s alleged transfer of missiles to Moscow ‘represents a direct threat to European security’.

‘The EU’s position on Iran’s involvement in Russia’s war has always been clear. The EU has repeatedly strongly warned Iran against the transfer of ballistic missiles to Russia,’ – pointed out the head of EU diplomacy.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the Western ideas of a new world order hypocrisy. According to him, they are aimed solely at preserving the neo-colonial system, showing their essence in the form of ‘hypocrisy, double standards and claims’.
