The US will deploy medium-range missile systems in Japan

The United States is interested in the deployment on the territory of Japan of ground-based medium-range missiles banned by the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles (INF Treaty), from which Washington withdrew in 2019. This was stated by US Secretary of the Army Christine Warmuth.

According to the Nikkei newspaper, at a conference in Virginia on September 4, Christine Warmuth said that the issue of missile deployment was raised during her visit to Japan in August during a meeting with Japanese Defence Minister Minoru Kihara.

“Certainly, we would like to see (the actions – ed.) of a multi-sphere task force,” the newspaper quoted the US Army secretary as saying.

The official added that the United States “clearly expressed its interest to the Japanese self-defence forces”.

Recall, earlier The Wall Street Journal reported that the United States will create a new military command in Japan, which will coordinate military operations and exercises.
