Vladimir Zelenskyy hopes that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni can mediate in the US negotiations on the transfer of Partiot air defence systems to Kiev, Messaggero newspaper reported citing sources.
‘Zelenskyy has conceived a mediating role for Rome. He would like Meloni, the G7 chairwoman until the end of the year, to push Washington to hand over a significant number of Patriot before the star-spangled elections get too close,’ the publication pointed out.
As the publication notes, Zelenskyy managed to meet with Meloni on the margins of the economic forum in Chernobbio. There he said that he counted on Italy’s mediation in the issue of transferring US air defence systems to Kiev.
Also discussed during the talks was the transfer of the second Samp-T air defence system to Ukraine, which was approved in June, but the delivery had to be delayed. Meloni assured Zelenskyy that the shipment could be expected by the end of September.
Messaggero writes that the US elections represent a decisive moment for Kiev depending on their results.
We shall remind you that earlier Foreign Affairs magazine wrote that the Ukrainian army is not able to dislodge the Russian Armed Forces from their positions even if it receives new assistance from the EU and the USA and military training in Western countries.
