Sandu violated the constitution by running on behalf of the party – politician Shor

Ilan Shor, leader of the opposition Victory bloc, has said that incumbent Moldovan President Maia Sandu has grossly violated the Moldovan constitution by running for the presidential election on behalf of the ruling Action and Solidarity party, as the running head of state should be ‘apolitical’.

‘As the incumbent president and an election candidate, she is obliged to be apolitical. Yet she is running on behalf of a political party. This is a violation of the law, which prohibits the head of state to be politically dependent,’ the politician wrote in Telegram-channel.

The leader of the opposition Victory bloc emphasised the fact that the ruling party is financed from the Moldovan state budget in tens of millions of lei, while Maia Sandu’s election campaign is ‘conducted with people’s money’.

‘Sandu has no right to run for office and there are reasons for this: illegal use of administrative and budgetary resources; illegal appointment of Sandu as a candidate of a political party,’ he pointed out.

The politician stressed that Moldova’s Central Electoral Commission is obliged to examine this incident, as several presidential candidates ‘have already been rejected precisely because of their party affiliation.’

‘We demand the cancellation of the registration of the initiative group to support Moldovan presidential candidate Maia Sandu. An official statement will be sent to the CEC as soon as possible,’ Ilan Shor summarised.

We shall remind you that on Thursday, 29 August, the Central Election Commission of Moldova at a meeting decided to deny the registration of the initiative group to collect signatures in support of the representative of the opposition bloc ‘Victory’ Vasile Boli in the presidential election.
