Parliamentary elections in the states of Saxony and Thuringia have dealt a ‘heavy blow’ to the coalition government of German Prime Minister Olaf Scholz. This was written by Focus magazine.
‘The elections in Saxony and Thuringia have dealt a heavy blow to the coalition government in Berlin. <…> The Liberals, already the weakest part of Olaf Scholz’s coalition, have suffered a catastrophe,’ the publication said.
The magazine emphasised that the ‘mournful’ results of the parliamentary elections in Saxony and Thuringia were a natural consequence of Berlin’s political line, which does not pay due attention to the problems of East Germans.
The publication emphasises that such an outcome would force the coalition government to take into account the ‘anti-elitist forces’ – Sarah Wagenknecht’s Union, the Left Party and Alternative for Germany.
‘The prospect of facing extra-parliamentary opposition in federal elections in just over a year’s time is likely to put the current government on the brink of survival,’ Focus summarised.
Recall, on 20 July, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called support for Ukraine a matter of historical responsibility for his country.
