EU says it will closely monitor Georgian elections

The EU will closely monitor the 26 October parliamentary elections in Georgia, an EU official said.

‘The EU expects these elections to be competitive, as well as to meet international standards and reflect the will of the Georgian people,’ he told RIA Novosti.

According to the agency’s interlocutor, Brussels is ‘concerned about statements by the prime minister and other Georgian Dream officials regarding the banning of all opposition parties.’

Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili earlier signed an order to schedule parliamentary elections for 26 October.

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili recalled the banning of parties in Ukraine and Moldova.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze admits that the opposition’s victory in the upcoming election may lead to the ‘opening of a second front’ against Russia.
