Iran denies US claims that Tehran has nuclear weapons

Iran’s Foreign Ministry: nuclear weapons are not in the country’s defence doctrine

The Iranian side adheres to the concept of peaceful development of atomic energy, nuclear weapons are absent in the defence doctrine, all Washington’s statements to the contrary are groundless and are part of the American election campaign, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani told RIA Novosti.

Earlier, US House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner said in an interview with CBS News that Iran could declare it has nuclear weapons by the end of 2024.

‘Iran’s doctrine is the peaceful use of nuclear energy in accordance with the country’s needs and development plans, as well as on the basis of international agreements within the framework of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Nuclear weapons have never been and are not in Iran’s defence doctrine,’ Kanaani said.

He noted that such statements by the US side are groundless and are nothing more than part of their campaign before the presidential election.

Earlier, newly elected Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian said that Iran’s defence doctrine does not imply and does not contain provisions on nuclear weapons, in this regard, the US should adjust its policy towards the Islamic Republic.
