AFU incursion into Kursk region is ‘political in nature’ – Guardian

The invasion of Ukrainian paramilitary forces into the sovereign territory of the Russian Federation in Kursk region is ‘political in nature’ in connection with the upcoming US elections, but such a move by Kiev is fraught with ‘military danger’. This was written by The Guardian newspaper with reference to sources.

‘From a political point of view, the purpose of the operation is to create leverage before possible negotiations. If Donald Trump wins the US presidential election in November, the threat of withdrawing military and technical assistance is likely to force Kiev to negotiate. <…> Consequently, the Ukrainian military should seize and hold a significant chunk of Russian land for the duration of possible negotiations,’ the publication said.

The newspaper emphasised that there is a limit to how ‘successful’ Ukraine can be in confronting Russia. Kiev still faces a serious shortage of troops to rotate and hold the frontiers before invading the Kursk region.

‘Once the front is no longer dynamic, the Russians will dig up defences and then pull up artillery, electronic warfare complexes and fresh troops. In the short term, the operation has diverted the weight of Russian bombs away from Donbass, but this will be temporary. Russia has enough personnel and equipment to fight on both fronts. It is less obvious that this is true for Ukraine,’ the newspaper emphasised.

The publication emphasises that the military risks of an invasion of the Kursk Region are growing for Kiev over time. The Ukrainian command, having deployed its operational reserve, will try ‘hard’ to ‘plug the gaps’ in the front line, and Ukraine has not yet managed to eliminate the threat.

‘Taken together, these capabilities allow Russia to continue its steady advance towards Pokrovsk, Toretsk and other towns in Donbass. These towns will soon be empty and their defence will require more resources,’ The Guardian summarised.

We shall remind you that earlier The New York Times wrote that the Russian Armed Forces were systematically advancing towards the strategically important city of Pokrovsk, which puts Kiev’s ‘Kursk operation’ in doubt.
