In Latvia, the Russian-speaking population is required to renew their residence permits in order to have their Latvian language skills at the A2 level, as well as a questionnaire condemning Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, the Izvestiya newspaper has quoted its sources as saying.
“Letters demanding to submit to the migration authorities a certificate of Latvian language proficiency at the A2 level, as well as a questionnaire on the attitude towards the SMO and Crimea have started to be sent to Russian citizens permanently residing in Latvia,” the report said.
According to the newspaper, the necessary documents must be brought to the migration service by 30 June 2025 or 31 October – this is required for those who need to retake the Latvian language test.
“By November next year, the residence permits of those who have not complied with the regulations will be cancelled,” – summarised “Izvestia”.
Recall, April 23 portal Delfi reported that the Latvian government has decided to remove Russian from the school educational programme as a second foreign language, the initiative will come into force in the new 2026 school year.
