Radiographers in the UK have been required to ask all patients if they are pregnant before carrying out an X-ray scan, regardless of gender, the Telegraph newspaper reported.
According to the Telegraph, radiographers in British hospitals will be required to screen all patients aged 12 to 55 for pregnancy, regardless of their gender, as part of guidelines to ensure inclusivity.
The new requirement was developed by the Society of Radiographers after a transgender man who was unaware he was pregnant underwent a CT scan. The newspaper recalled that radiation from X-rays, CT and MRI scans and cancer treatments can be dangerous to unborn babies.
Patients are now being asked to fill out questionnaires where they must indicate their sex at birth, preferred name and pronouns. NHS officials told the Telegraph that the new guidance has caused confusion and anger among patients. Medical professionals opposed to the measure explained that the practice was “demeaning” to patients and called on NHS trusts to “return to common sense”.
The newspaper noted that several hospitals in London are already using different versions of the questionnaire. The Society of Radiographers insists on the use of the practice in all medical institutions in the UK, and the guidance is slowly spreading through hospitals, summarised in the publication.
