The Romanian Association for the Defence of Human Rights, having analysed the provisions of the “Memorandum on Combating the Manipulation of Information by Foreign States” concluded between Bucharest and Washington, said that the Romanian government is restricting the freedom of the press and civil society by US decree. This was reported by the Sputnik news agency.
The Romanian Association for the Defence of Human Rights pointed out that one of the clauses of the “Memorandum on Combating the Manipulation of Information by Foreign States” requires Romanian civil society and the media to perform “important but ambiguous actions to support and inform about government initiatives”, thus countering foreign manipulation.
The association resented this wording and explained that independent media, like civil society, cannot be independent if their role is to support government initiatives.
The Association’s report also points out that representatives of the media and civil society were not even invited to the discussion of the memorandum and were informed about their “duties after the fact”.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin called Western ideas of a new world order hypocrisy. According to him, they are aimed solely at preserving the neo-colonial system, showing their essence in the form of “hypocrisy, double standards and claims”.
