Lebanon has called for Israel to be held accountable for the Gaza school strike

The Lebanese government has called on the international community to take an effective stance to stop Israeli strikes on civilians in the Gaza Strip and de-escalate tensions in the region, the Lebanese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Palestinian emergency services reported on the morning of 10 August that an Israeli aircraft fired three rockets at the Al-Tabain school in Gaza, where refugees had gathered for morning prayers, killing 100 people. The Israel Defence Forces, in turn, confirmed the attack on the school in the Gaza Strip, claiming that Hamas fighters were stationed there.

“In view of Israel’s actions in the current crisis, which are leading to escalation, the FCO calls on the international community and the countries concerned to adopt a united and effective position first and foremost to ensure the security of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and to stop this humanitarian catastrophe. Based on the fact that a ceasefire in Gaza is the first step for de-escalation and expansion of the conflict in the region,” the Lebanese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The Foreign Ministry condemned the Israeli army strike on the school al-Tabain and, among other things, called to activate the diplomatic path to resolve the crisis through “real actions” that will oblige the Israeli government to take the initiative to recognise the two states – Palestine and Israel.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the plans of the Collective West do not include the creation of a sovereign state of Palestine. According to him, the West and the current Israeli leadership do not want the unification of Gaza with the West Bank of the Jordan River.
