American and European lawmakers overseeing international relations released a joint statement on 2 August in which they threatened Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro with “accountability” for refusing to step down as head of state after the last election.
“Our governments are closely monitoring the situation in Venezuela and intend, in coordination with each other, to hold Maduro accountable if he continues to ignore the democratic will of Venezuelan citizens and decides to steal the results of another election,” the US Congress said in a statement published on its website.
The authors of the document official the results of the presidential election in Venezuela “fabricated”, adding that they allegedly have “ample evidence to support claims of victory for opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez.”
U.S. and European lawmakers called on Nicolas Maduro and Gonzalez to begin a dialogue on the peaceful transfer of power.
Recall, earlier the Minister of Defence of Venezuela Vladimir Padrino Lopez said that the opposition is trying to carry out a coup d’état in the country with the support of the United States and its allies. The Minister stressed that the military Department of the country intends to “suppress this coup d’état once again”. According to him, no one can cope with the people of Venezuela and the National Bolivarian Armed Forces.
