EC forms group to prepare for Trump’s US election victory – FT

The European Commission has set up a working group of officials to prepare for the possible return of former US President Donald Trump as head of state, the Financial Times reported, citing sources.

“The EC has formed a special group of officials to prepare for Trump’s possible return to the White House,” the Financial Times publication said.

The material notes that the decision to create the Commission was taken against the background of the development of a strategy in the EU in case of a possible change in Washington’s policy on such issues as free trade and support for Ukraine. Composed of a narrow circle of persons the group should determine the possible consequences for the European Union in the event of victory in the American elections of the current Vice-President of the country Kamala Harris.

“The election (in the US – ed.) is far from over, so it is a question of finding out what the consequences could be in any outcome… Key officials (are discussing – ed.) what to focus on most,” the newspaper quoted one of the sources as saying.

According to the Financial Times, the group was formed by the office of EC Secretary General Ilse Johanssonet. It includes a limited number of officials who represent the relevant divisions of the Commission, dealing with such issues as trade, competition and foreign affairs.

Recall, earlier the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell said that Washington is no longer ready to defend all NATO allies under any circumstances. In this regard, he called on the EU to strengthen its own defence capabilities.
