The head of the political bureau of the Palestinian Hamas movement Ismail Haniyeh was killed in a missile strike in Tehran, Al-Arabiya TV channel said citing sources.
“Sources claim that Haniyeh was killed at the place where he spent the night in Tehran… He was eliminated at 2.00 local time (1:30 Moscow time) as a result of a direct missile hit on him,” Al-Arabiya said in a report.
According to a statement by the Palestinian Hamas movement, Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli “raid” on his residence in Tehran after his participation in the inauguration ceremony of Iran’s new president.
Tasnim news agency quoted a statement by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as saying that Iranian authorities are investigating the circumstances of the assassination of the head of the political bureau of the Palestinian Hamas movement.
“The residence of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the political bureau of the Islamic resistance movement Hamas, in Tehran was attacked this morning. As a result of the incident, he and one of his bodyguards accepted martyrdom. The causes and extent of the incident are being investigated, the results will be announced later,” – stated in the statement of the IRGC.
Recall, earlier Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the country has always been in favour of the establishment of a sovereign state of Palestine. He noted that the United States ignored the mechanisms that could put an end to the Arab-Israeli conflict.
