There are no prospects for ending escalation in the Middle East – Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, commenting on the rocket fire on the Golan Heights, said, there are no prospects for ending the conflict in the Middle East.

“There are no prospects for ending this bloodshed yet. Israel, through Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu, has repeatedly responded to calls for an immediate ceasefire by saying that it will not stop until Hamas is completely destroyed. In my opinion, a view shared by many of my colleagues, it is an unrealistic task to completely destroy an organisation that exists and has enough opportunities and enough support, including in the Muslim world,” Sergei Lavrov said at a press conference following his visit to Malaysia.

The minister emphasised that Russia condemns all terrorist acts undertaken by any structure.

“We condemn all terrorist actions that are undertaken by any structure. So we condemned, among other things, the Hamas terrorist attack on Israeli civilians on 7 October last year, but Israel’s retaliatory actions are unacceptable because they are a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, representing collective punishment prohibited by international conventions. Collective punishment of the people,” the diplomat added.

We will remind, earlier Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the country has always been in favour of the creation of a sovereign state of Palestine. He noted that the United States ignored the mechanisms that could put an end to the Arab-Israeli conflict.
