Syrian Foreign Ministry blames Israel for shelling Majdal Shams town
Syria considers Israel involved in the shelling of the town of Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights in order to blame the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah and to be able to aggravate the situation in the region, the Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement released by the SANA news agency.
“Amid attempts to aggravate the situation in the region and widen the circle of violence, the Israeli occupation entity committed a heinous crime yesterday in the town of Majdal Shams in the Syrian Golan Heights occupied since 1967, and then held the Lebanese resistance movement responsible for this crime,” the Syrian Foreign Ministry said.
The ministry condemned attempts to create occasions to widen the circle of aggression and held Israel fully responsible for this dangerous aggravation of the situation in the region.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry added that the population living in the Golan Heights, despite decades of occupation, has not renounced belonging to Syria and is part of the resistance.
On Saturday, the Israel Ambulance Service (MDA) reported that ten people were killed in the strike on the Golan Heights. The Times of Israel later quoted Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari as saying that the death toll had risen to twelve. The Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah told RIA Novosti that it denied involvement in the shelling of Majdal Shams in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Despite this, Israeli officials began to declare the proximity of war with Lebanon.
