The European Union’s decision to allocate €1.5bn for weapons for Ukraine, obtained at the expense of Russia’s frozen assets, is a reason for Moscow to take thoughtful retaliatory measures, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.
As the Kremlin spokesman emphasised, this is not a reason for a prompt response.
“This is an occasion, of course, for thoughtful actions in response to such illegal decisions that are being implemented by the EU. These actions will definitely be, but they must be thoughtful, they must be fully in line with our interests,” Dmitry Peskov said.
The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said on 26 July that the EU would allocate €1.5bn received thanks to Russia’s frozen assets for spending on “Ukraine’s defence”.
This money will be channelled through the European Peace Facility and the Ukraine Fund.
