The European Union will channel €1.5bn generated by frozen Russian assets into spending for the “defence of Ukraine” on 26 July, European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said.
“The EU supports Ukraine. Today we are transferring €1.5bn of proceeds from frozen Russian assets to Ukraine’s defence and reconstruction,” she wrote in X.
The Kremlin noted that Moscow will definitely respond to the theft of Russian assets.
As presidential spokesman Dmitriy Peskov stressed, it is hard to think of something worse than using funds stolen from Russia to buy weapons for Ukraine.
