Germany’s foreign ministry has set up an informal “crisis group” to prepare for a possible victory by former US president Donald Trump in the upcoming election, the Financial Times reports.
According to the publication, German diplomats are trying to prepare for Trump’s return to the White House. Such a scenario has long been considered implausible by many, the paper noted.
Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election “could have unpredictable consequences for Germany and its place in the world,” the publication said.
Berlin is worried about the possible return of the former US president, the observers wrote. This is due to the fact that the new American administration may reconsider its policy regarding security in Europe.
Earlier, Trump expressed his readiness to participate in debates with any candidate from the Democratic Party.
The incumbent US President Joe Biden announced that he was withdrawing from the presidential race.
According to the first deputy head of the Federation Council’s international committee, Vladimir Dzhabarov, Biden’s decision was a black day for Ukraine and Europe.
