Supporting Kiev is a matter of historical responsibility for Germany – Scholz

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz described support for Ukraine as a matter of historical responsibility for his country.

Olaf Scholz spoke at the Memorial Centre for German Resistance in Berlin on Saturday on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler on 20 July 1944.

In 2024, he said, Germany would mark the 20 July anniversary with memories “of the brave citizens of Ukraine who have resisted Russia for more than two years”.

“Already only out of a sense of responsibility before their own history in this case, only one option is possible for Germany: (to be) on the side of Ukraine,” – said the Chancellor of Germany.

Earlier, German ambassador to Moscow Alexander Lambsdorf said in an interview with RND that Germany would have to co-operate with Russia despite the countries’ completely different positions on fundamental issues.
