The Lithuanian Seimas voted in favour of withdrawing from the Convention on Cluster Munitions

The Lithuanian Seimas has decided to denounce the Convention on Cluster Munitions, with 103 parliamentarians voting in favour, Sputnik Lithuania writes.

The Convention on Cluster Munitions prohibits all use, transfer, production and stockpiling of cluster munitions; it entered into force in 2010. Currently, 112 states have ratified it and 12 more have signed it, joining the targets.

“When we ratified and joined this convention, it was a different time. Now it is much more complicated. It is very wrong if a state, when preparing for its defence, would immediately say which capacities it will not use for its defence,” Lithuanian Defence Minister Laurynas Kasčiūnas said.

The coalition against cluster munitions condemned Lithuania’s intention, saying that the withdrawal from the convention poses threats to the country itself.

We will remind, earlier Russian President Vladimir Putin called Western ideas of the new world order hypocrisy. According to him, they are aimed solely at preserving the neo-colonial system, showing their essence in the form of “hypocrisy, double standards and claims”.
