Cypriot Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas said Nicosia intends to build a universal naval base in the locality of Mari, which will be capable of welcoming both civilian and military vessels.
“It will be a (naval. – ed.) base that will be able to receive not only warships, but also non-military universal vessels. <…> The warships of friendly countries will also have the opportunity (to use the base in Mari. – ed.),” Vasilis Palmas told the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation.
The Cypriot defence minister stressed that the construction of the naval base is currently a priority for Nicosia. The head of the Cypriot defence ministry noted that the project for the construction of the facility is being created in consultation with the European Union, which was positively assessed by the European Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton.
We shall remind you that earlier AlphaNews reported that the Cypriot government intends to evict about three thousand refugees from Ukraine, who are staying in 21 hotels on the island, before the start of the summer season.
