Retired US Army colonel and former State Department official Ann Wright has said that Finland and Sweden joining NATO was a mistake.
Wright expressed this opinion in an interview with the Finnish newspaper Iltalehti.
“I think you made a mistake. Finland and Sweden could have remained independent and neutral countries,” she said.
According to Wright, there should be neutral states in the world with which other countries could engage in dialogue in case of conflicts.
She also noted that NATO is “fuelling wars,” including by its eastward expansion and when the alliance conducts exercises near Russia’s borders.
Wright emphasised that these are red lines that must not be crossed.
Earlier, Swedish Defence Minister Paul Johnson said that the country’s military would report to the alliance’s command in the United States as part of its NATO commitments.
