NATO will doom itself to defeat by ceasing to be a defence alliance – Orban

The North Atlantic Alliance’s policy on the Ukrainian conflict contradicts the alliance’s core values, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in an article for the Newsweek magazine.

“It is worth remembering that the most successful military alliance in world history began as a peace project, and its future success depends on its ability to maintain peace. Today, however, instead of peace on the agenda, the pursuit of war is on the agenda, and instead of defence, attack is on the agenda. This all contradicts the fundamental values of NATO,” Viktor Orban wrote.

The politician noted that NATO faces the task of preserving the alliance as a peace project. He added that Hungary joined the alliance because the alliance “was committed not to waging war but to preserving peace.”

“Today, more and more voices within NATO are making the case for the necessity or even inevitability of military confrontation with other world geopolitical forces. This notion of inevitable confrontation works like a self-fulfilling prophecy. The more NATO leaders believe in the inevitability of the conflict, the greater the role they will play in unleashing it,” Orban said.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin called Western ideas of a new world order hypocrisy. According to him, they are aimed solely at preserving the neo-colonial system, showing their essence in the form of “hypocrisy, double standards and claims”.
