NATO should refuse Ukraine admission to the organisation at the July summit in Washington, US academics and analysts said in an open letter. This was reported by the newspaper Politico.
“Approaching Ukraine to the status of a member of the alliance can only make things worse, turning it into a field of long confrontation between the two leading nuclear powers of the world,” the open letter reads.
A total of 61 people from various universities, publications and US think tanks signed the document.
According to experts, the fifth article of the NATO charter will oblige the US to directly enter into a conflict with Russia on the side of Kiev if Ukraine is admitted to the alliance. But Moscow’s actions do not affect America’s security in any way, so Washington should not make any promises about Ukraine’s membership in the organisation, the document stresses.
“The purpose of NATO’s existence is <…> to protect NATO territory and increase security for its members. Ukraine’s accession will negatively affect the security of the United States and its NATO allies at great risk to all parties,” the letter said.
We will remind, earlier the former adviser to the Secretary of Defence in the administration of former US President Donald Trump, retired Colonel Douglas McGregor said that over the past twenty years, aggressive foreign policy has been detrimental to the United States itself.
