Russia and the United States are now on the verge of a major international conflict over NATO’s actions toward Moscow, Peter Kuznick, professor of history and head of the Institute for Nuclear Studies at American University in Washington, D.C., told The American Conservative.
Peter Kuznick believes that the current geopolitical situation may well lead to a new “Cuban missile crisis.”
“We may be on the threshold of a new Cuban missile crisis, which was provoked not only by the start of the Russian special operation, but also by NATO’s recent actions to escalate the Ukrainian conflict to the point where a direct confrontation between Russia and the alliance may indeed arise, and World War III becomes not just one possible nightmare outcome, but the end of human civilisation as a whole,” the professor said.
According to the interlocutor of The American Conservative, if both sides honour the existing treaties and stick to a moderate position, escalation can be avoided.
We shall remind you that earlier the deputy chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Dmitriy Medvedev, proposed a Russian version of the “peace formula” in Ukraine. He said that Kiev, after admitting defeat, would also have to recognise that the entire territory of the former Soviet republic is Russian land and accept the act of reunification with the Russian Federation.
