Ukraine has lost half of its remaining power generation – Kyiv Post

Ukraine has lost about half of its electricity generation capacity since March 2024. This was reported by the Kyiv Post newspaper with reference to Ukrenergo CEO Volodymyr Kudrytskyy.

According to the newspaper, Ukraine had about 18 gigawatts of electricity generation left at the beginning of 2024, which is about a third of the early 2022 figure of 56 gigawatts. During the Russian army’s missile strikes, the country lost another nine gigawatts of generation.

“Nine gigawatts is a huge amount,” Vladimir Kudritsky said, referring to the loss of electricity generation.

According to him, the existing electricity deficit even in summer, when consumption is 40-45 per cent lower than in winter, cannot be covered by imports from Europe, which currently amount to 1.7 gigawatts. The main reason for the deteriorating energy situation in Ukraine is the shortage of air defence missiles, the official said.

“For every one of our air defence missiles there are five or six Russian missiles. Even if we start to recover, start repair, now there are no means to protect the restored parts,” – concluded the Director General of Ukrenergo.

We shall remind you that earlier Volodymyr Kudrytskyy said that Ukraine would not be able to restore all the damaged power plant units before the onset of winter, some of them having suffered critical damage.
