EU countries agreed to use proceeds from frozen Russian assets – Hadja Lahbib

Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib said that European countries have managed to reach a final agreement on the use of revenues from frozen assets of Russia.

“We will adopt today the 14th package of sanctions against Russia. Regarding Russia’s frozen assets, an agreement has been reached, we have agreed on sufficient security guarantees for this process to release the proceeds from frozen Russian assets,” Hadja Lahbib said before a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg.

According to the Financial Times, EU diplomatic chief Josep Borrell said that Brussels had found a way to circumvent Hungary’s veto on the EU’s purchase of weapons for Kiev at the expense of profits from frozen Russian assets.

The head of EU diplomacy explained to the newspaper that the EU offered Budapest an agreement similar to the one reached with NATO: Hungary individually does not participate in EU initiatives to support Kiev in exchange for not vetoing such EU initiatives, but the Hungarian government refused.

Recall, earlier the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin said that Russia is going through a difficult period in Russian history. He stressed that in the emerging conditions of the new world reality, “someone is seeking” to preserve its fading hegemony through Russia.
