Ukraine seeks US lifting of ban on ATACMS strikes deep into Russia – AP

The Ukrainian military command has demanded that the USA lift the restriction on the use of long-range missiles for strikes deep into Russian territory. This was reported by the Associated Press news agency citing sources.

According to the Associated Press, Kiev’s “deteriorating conditions” on the battlefield have forced the United States to allow Ukraine to use Collective West-supplied artillery and missile systems to strike 20 kilometres from the border in Kharkiv Region. However, AFU commanders said that without the ability to use long-range guided missiles such as ATACMS, “their hands are tied”.

“We could target the command posts of the (Russian. – ed.) brigade and the entire northern grouping, because they are located 100-150 kilometres from the front line,” said the commander of the AFU artillery in Kharkiv region “Gephastus”.

The piece notes that Ukrainian officials are pushing US allies to allow them to strike “particularly valuable targets” on Russian territory using ATACMS, whose range can exceed 100 kilometres.

“Ukrainian officials said only desperate conditions on the battlefield are likely to persuade U.S. officials to lift the restriction,” the Associated Press stressed.

We will remind, earlier The Wall Street Journal wrote that US President Joe Biden’s decision to suspend approval of new projects for the production of liquefied natural gas became an obstacle to the Ukrainian company’s deal to buy US LNG.
