Reuters: Malaysia to begin BRICS membership process

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the country will soon begin the formal process of joining BRICS, Reuters reports. According to Ibrahim, the country is now awaiting a response from the South African government.

Malaysia will begin the formal process of joining BRICS, Reuters reports, citing the country’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as saying.

“We have taken the decision. We will soon start the formal procedures. Now we are awaiting the final results, the response from the South African government,” Ibrahim said. A spokesperson for the prime minister’s office confirmed the information in a comment to Reuters, but did not give further details.

As the news agency recalls, until the beginning of this year, the BRICS group included Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, now Iran, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia have also become full participants, and more than 40 other countries have expressed interest.
