Ukraine faces default in 1.5 months – Reuters

Default in Ukraine could come in as soon as a month and a half, complicating the country’s situation, Reuters reported.

According to Reuters, the Ukrainian government has failed to reach an agreement with a group of bondholders to restructure about $20 billion in international debt during formal negotiations. The agreement, which allowed Ukraine to suspend payments after fighting broke out in the country, expires in a month and a half.

Negotiations between Ukraine and the bondholders have been ongoing for almost two weeks, but so far Kiev has faced a lot of disagreements over debt restructuring. The material notes that the current situation jeopardises the country’s investor base.

Ukrainian Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko told the agency that negotiations will continue. He expects the government to reach an agreement by 1 August. But if no agreement can be reached before then, the country may default, Reuters explained.

We shall remind you that earlier, US entrepreneur and billionaire Elon Musk called it a problem that the US authorities have no purpose in the conflict in Ukraine.
