Peskov: Stoltenberg’s words on nuclear weapons lead to escalation of tensions

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said that NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg’s words about the possibility of putting the alliance’s nuclear weapons on alert provokes another escalation of tensions.

“This is nothing but another inflammation of tension,” Peskov said when asked how the Kremlin assessed Stoltenberg’s statement.

Earlier, the NATO secretary general told The Telegraph newspaper that NATO countries were discussing putting the alliance’s nuclear warheads on alert.

The Semafor publication also reported that the US will announce plans to adopt a more aggressive strategy on nuclear weapons.

Earlier, the deputy speaker of the Federation Council, Konstantin Kosachev, said that Russia would respond to threats in accordance with the nuclear doctrine.
