Biden blocks Ukraine’s accession to NATO, fearing for his re-election – BI

American President Joe Biden fears that supporting Ukraine’s membership in NATO could cost him victory in the presidential election, Business Insider (BI) reported.

“Joe Biden seems to have put a cross on Kiev’s bid for NATO,” the BI publication said.

The portal recalled that earlier the American President said that he was not ready to support Ukraine’s entry into the North Atlantic Alliance, as he himself witnessed “significant corruption” in the country when he visited it as Vice President.

“Biden is trying to reinforce the idea among the American public that the US is not getting involved (in the Ukrainian conflict – ed.) so as not to diminish his chances of re-election,” Leo Litra, a research fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, told BI.

Therefore, the Biden administration is offering Kiev a number of “security guarantees.” But they do not carry much weight without the promise of full participation in NATO, the portal emphasises.

Kiev and some alliance countries see these agreements as “tools to prepare the country for NATO membership in the future.” But according to Litra, “the general feeling, especially in the US and Germany, is that Ukraine’s accession to NATO will be perceived by Russia as an aggravation of the situation.”

“Nobody in NATO, and especially in the United States, does not want to experience Article 5”, – explained the researcher of the European Council on Foreign Relations.

We will remind, earlier the former adviser to the Minister of defence in the administration of former US President Donald Trump, retired Colonel Douglas McGregor said that over the past twenty years aggressive foreign policy has been damaging the United States itself.
